Used to be that writing letters and making phone calls and fighting in the courts did nothing to stop the Jim Crow laws and segregation. But then one day it worked anyway. Never give in to despair. There's always hope for a better future.
NYC bans people from taking their guns out of the city?!?! There's no fucking way that could pass review at the Supreme Court. What are you supposed to do if you move out of the city, anyway? Sell you guns first? Bullshit.
I don't envy New Yorkers.
I have an idea for an amendment. Require social media checks for anyone who wants to be hired as a law enforcement officer, too. After all, if merely owning a gun justifies intense background scrutiny, then obviously such scrutiny should also be applied to someone who will not only own a gun...
https://realestate.usnews.com/real-estate/articles/what-limits-can-your-landlord-put-on-gun-possession
So it sounds like it's down to state law. In some states landlords cannot prohibit guns, in others they can. You guys in NY are probably screwed, but I'm thinking this might be something...
Came here to post about this. I've said for a while now that this sort of active discrimination against gun owners was coming. We need to start pushing for legislation to make it illegal to discriminate against gun owners, or against anyone who is simply exercising their rights.
I'm curious to know how the new bushing works out. I have a brass catcher net that I take with me to the range and set up right next to my gun so that I don't annoy the guys in the lanes to my right. If I could change the bushing and alleviate the need for that I'd probably go for it.
Interesting. I wonder: if you soldered the magazine in place so that it could only me loaded with clips, would the rifle no longer qualify as one that can accept detachable magazine? The Internet lawyer in me wants to know!
Came here to mention this. I bought one of these and it improved my groups quite noticeably. I'm still not going to win any competitions, but I bought my Mini-14 because I wanted something useful and reliable, not because I wanted a tack driver.
I have slings on my rifles but they work differently from that one. Mine don't need to be disconnected from the rear of the gun and you put your arm through a loop in the middle of the sling rather than the end. Will that make a difference at Appleseed?
I can agree with all that. I'm not saying that video games cause violence. They don't. But they can, and often do, depict violence being used in immoral ways. For example, GTA V. It's an interesting game, very well made and polished. But nonetheless, it's about being a criminal. Players...
I played those games too. That's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about the glorification of criminal violence and "good guys" who go outside the law to get things done.
I agree with you about understanding the pain of others, but I don't know what to say about the issue of morality...
I've seen that video before. I've never tried holding like that at the range because honestly I'd forgotten about it, but I may give it a try the next time I go.
Interesting points to ponder.
Can I get an Amen brothers and sisters? Amen!
I'm not one who blames video games for violence, but I strongly believe that American culture in general tends to glamorize violence and we desperately need to change that. Movies, TV shows, video games, rappers and...
I'm probably holding it wrong in some way, because I've never had anyone instruct me on the proper way. I've read a few books that describe off hand holds, but that's it.
You're absolutely right about most liberals. They are ignorant about guns and they seem to wear that ignorance as a badge of pride, but it is possible to educate them and get them to adjust their opinions, at least, even if they don't do a full reversal. I remember several years ago I was on...
I'd say that "rehabilitation" doesn't even get tried in the US. Our system is about punishment only, and we already have extremely long sentences for crime as it is. We also incarcerate more people than any other country in the world. It's a system that doesn't seem to work.
That sounds...
Yeah it kind of got derailed. The point was supposed to be to talk about ways of addressing violence without jumping on the ineffective gun control bandwagon. That intervention program is the kind of thing that I myself most favor, and I was hoping that others would talk about what they think...
I won? No. I presented my opinions. You presented your opinions. A brief conversation on the Internet like this isn't going to change either of us, but it hopefully helps us to understand each other a little more.
I have read the article, and apart from the conclusions at the end about this...
I say there is no religious discrimination because there is no attempt to either compel or prevent religious behavior. Except, of course, that the Little Sisters of the Poor want to compel adherence to Catholic doctrine by it's employees, potentially a reasonable requirement, but they never...
Oh wait, I was thinking of Mother Theresa's organization. The LSP are the ones who sued the government because they objected to the requirements of the health insurance law that said they must certify in writing that they did not want to provide contraception coverage.
I'm sorry, but that...
Sorry, but I have no idea what you are referring to. Is the government going after them? I thought they mostly operated in India, anyway, so what does our government need with them?
I agree, but at the same time I've been forced to pay taxes all my life to support things I disagree with: the Iraq War (Bush 2, not Bush 1), the invasion of Panama (Bush 1), CIA torture programs, over spending on the military in general, tax exemptions for big businesses to set up shop (like...
Rand, Orwell, and Jefferson I've read. Rand was a decent novelist (I quite enjoyed The Fountainhead), but I think her philosophy of "egoism" is just selfishness gussied up to look pretty.Federalist Papers is on the shelf beside me, but I've only read bits here and there when looking up specific...
Interesting! I have been rather underwhelmed by the factory sights, but hadn't yet started playing dress up dolls with this gun, because I've heard there's no end to that rabbit hole. Something like the Tech Sights might work for me.
Do you actually choose to do so, though? It's very easy to say that you are willing to help, but how many of us actually follow through on that and do something to help? There are plenty of NGOs working to reduce violence - just google "violence prevention charity" and you'll find tons of...
You're fighting a straw man. Progressives do not think that only government can solve problems. Look at all the progressive charities and NGOs: Natural Resources Defense Council, ACLU, Doctors Without Borders, American Heart Association, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals...
Things like this would be a good counter to the gun control proponents. Too often they accuse pro-gun people of not wanting to do anything at all about violence in society, and too often they are exactly right in that criticism. Programs like this would be a way for pro-gun people to change...
It pretty much is the conservative position except for one small point: conservatives never seem to want to help others get educated and get their lives together. It's always something that conservatives think people need to do entirely without help, even though helping people do this ensures...
I went out yesterday with my 10/22 and M1 to practice. I think I'll shoot the 10/22 for this because the weight of the M1 is just a bit much for me to keep holding it up for more than about 30 shots. I'll take the M1 along with me as a backup, though, in case something goes wrong with the...
Hospitals Are Trying To Do What Politicians Haven't: Stop Gun Violence | HuffPost
Pardon the link to Huffington Post - it's not my favorite place on the web either - but this is a good article. It's a story about a violence prevention program that doesn't involve gun control. Instead it's...
Didn't think about a shooting mat. Thanks for mentioning that!
I've not decided what gun I'll take. Probably my 10/22 to make things easier on myself, but the M1 is definitely an option. I'm going to try and get out a shoot both this month to see which one I feel more comfortable with.
It didn't get much press? Good! The press is hyperactive in reporting "gun violence" and makes people think it happens more often than it really does. A little less reporting is a good thing in my opinion.

Someone on another forum mentioned this to me and it looks really interesting. It's a weekend rifle marksmanship course with a bit of history thrown in.
From their website:
I signed up for a clinic in January. Looking forward to it!
I wonder what the penalty is for using a mold instead of 3D printing to make the exact same prop? Oh, let me guess - that would be legal, because reasons.
And none of us are happy about this new law either. I'd been thinking for few years that I might want to retire to Washsington someday (the Olympic Penninsula is a very nice place) but now I have to reconsider that.
Oh, I see. I wondered what the shovel comment was about. It's one way to respond, but I think it's ultimately a futile one. Hiding guns will not stem the tide of gun prohibition. It would just let things get worse. Ultimately, only direct resistance stops tyranny. That's my armchair...
I'm in a dillemna, though. If I vote for Republicans they'll attack my right to get married, or even use a public restroom. Voting is not clear cut for me. But let's not sidetrack this thread.
