Drones are fragile.

I would think heavier bird shot would be more appropriate than buck.

You don't need a lot of penetration (at least with current designs). What you do want is lots of chances to hit something important.

This is an interesting system under development. Uses the standard 5.56 platform in this example but adaptable to other calibers.
As I understand it, the optic decides when to fire based upon target alignment picture and ballistic calculations. It eliminates the variables of improper technique like trigger pull, flinch, etc. Pulling the trigger is the final arming in the sequence and there is a momentary lag between target acquisition and alignment of the ballistic sweet spot when the weapon fires.
Better range than peppering the sky and a 95% hit rate in testing. How that equates IRL....YMMV. I'd like to see how it performs with faster moving targets, but it's a start.

IMO the application goes beyond just drone defense.

I was watching a YouTube video a whole back about a group of foreign fighters (read: mercenaries) fighting in Ukraine. It seemed they had a hell of a time taking down the drones, though, a few well placed shots from standard 5.56 or whatever they were carrying did take them down. I would say the tracking/aiming at them is the challenge.
