Not that I waste energy on this topic but WE ALREADY HAD UNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHECKS! Oh, until NYS decided not to cooperate and started their own. Any state you go to and buy from a store….. runs a background check. Only deviation is some states if you have a pistol permit consider that verification you are not a prohibited person. THIS is an example of why we make no progress in the human and mental violence. Exactly which recent shooting happened because the store didn’t run a check? I’ll wait. No not someone else bought the firearm for them (Straw Act), not left the firearm unsecured KNOWING there was an issue. PURCHASED. Which incident recently happened when FAMILY, FRIENDS, and MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS ALL KNEW there was an issue and the concern had access to firearms? ALL of the “kids” who acted out were known but not reported BECAUSE OF FEDERAL LAW.

As stated if anyone thinks this is about stopping criminals they are insane. They are all about tracking us and what legal gun owners have. When criminals get caught with guns most of them have drugs and the gun gets tossed. We do not have the same considerations provided to us. They hate us more than gang members.
Back in my hometown in New Yorkistan, a cop I was friendly with filled me in on a dirty little secret re confiscated guns. If your permit was suspended, or your guns seized for some other reason (domestic incident, etc.), they would inventory them into the evidence locker and require you to sign a form that you acknowledged that they had the right to dispose of them as they saw fit WITHOUT compensation if you didn‘t get them back within 1 year.
And getting them back was a struggle. When it happened to me, it was a battle to the finish. Took me six months with hiring a lawyer, going to Court, testifying without preparation, and winning, and getting the Court to immediately reinstate my suspended permit, - and then the real fight began to get them back from the cops.
Another thing is the loophole they use in New Yorkistan: they treat long guns differently than handguns, and there is no defined path to get your long guns back, short of hiring a lawyer and dragging the PD thru NY’s Supreme Court, - and if you don’t get that done BEFORE 1 year timeframe is up, your guns will likely be gone.
Another shitty thing they will do is to declare your firearm(s) as a nuisance, and therefore subject to confiscation,- even when you have done nothing wrong, and are not charged with any crime. (That happened to a father and son in Colden, NY a year or two back).
But what is absolutely corrupt is that they do that to enrich themselves by theft of your legally owned property. My cop friend told me that every officer in the department kept tabs on specific guns they wanted that were in the evidence locker, and when the 1 year timeframe limit was coming up. At which time your guns would disappear into some officer’s private collection. And if you then asked them where your property is, they would just tell you that they were “disposed of” because you didn’t pick them up within the 1 year timeframe limit.
