New Carbine wants training.

Hey.

I’m the proud owner of a new Ruger PC9 carbine. It is fun to shoot. But, I think I need some training, if I want it to be anything more than an expensive plinker.

I have experience hunting and bench shooting, but no experience with tactical shooting.

I live in Ulster county. Any suggestions?

I’ll do a proper range report and post pics after I get the rifle properly broken in.

Ok. I’ve registered for the defensive carbine class. It sounds interesting.

I’m looking for some personal opinions or experience. The factory sights don’t work very well with my bifocals. I have a Nikon 1.5-4.5x20 Tactical P scope and a Bushnell TRS-25 red dot. Which do you like better for the rifle? Keep in mind, the PC carbine is not a match rifle and doesn’t seem to have a practical accuracy beyond 50 yards.

Out to 200 yards there is no better sighting system than a red dot. Or a reflex sight such as an EoTech.

Funny, yes? Taccom makes a small rail that mounts wear the rear sight goes.

This has a few advantages.

1. The sight alignment is not effected by take-down.
2. The sight is lower, Thus, it allows a better cheek weld.
3. I'm hoping the front sight will co-witness with the red dot.

The disadvantage is that the rear sight is no longer available as a back-up. If the red dot breaks, you pretty much stuck with only the front sight post. But, since the PC9 isn't a go-to-war rifle, I don't think that's a big sacrifice.

I may keep the Red Dot only for the defensive shooting course. I,ll probably switch to the Nikon 1.5-4.5x20 P-Tactical Scope for casual shooting. I'll put the rear sight back on. This depends mostly on how much get out of the red-dot.

I have been using the Magpul Pmags for a G17 that have worked flawlessly, I think they were about $13.00 each from the Magshack.com.

I like your cheek rest there. And I wouldn't worry about blocking the rear sight either. You could always use a QD mount besides.
@Willjr75, see how he has his sling attached at the rear? That is what I referred to as a stirrup.
With that you don't need any sling attachments on the stock itself.

The POI does shift a little when on the receiver rail. Since the receiver itself has to be removed from the stock, it can be off slightly when putting it back.

I noticed some POI shift on mine. Not much but it was there. I originally zeroed at 25 yards with all rounds touching right smack in the middle of a quarter-sized bullseye. After cleaning it, the POI was a little to the right and higher away from the quarter-sized bullseye with some rounds touching the outer edge.

I mounted my red dot on the barrel after that.

I have a similar POI shift with the top rail on the Galil. But it's only a 1" MOA or less shift at 100 yards so I can deal with that.

Other than the involved process in cleaning it with tools, the carbine is great and fits the bill here in NY without having to do anything stupid to it.

I'd recommend it to any Nyer over an AR9.

That stuff is cheap but it's good. It's my defacto training ammo because the recoil feels the same as my +p defensive ammo. The NATO 9mm load is fairly hot.

Actually, it's been NATO. I'll get a flier every once in a while. I'm also shooting from a sandbag when I zero it.

I shoot from using a rest when I'm zeroing it. This rest will turn in 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards with my 223 varmint. Of course, the dot is 3 MOA. I shouldn't expect puny groups.

I don't think cleaning the PC9 is particularly complex. Anyone who has cleans a Ruger 10/22 should be at home. If you want something complex to clean, try a Henry H001 22LR.

I am still deciding if I want this or something more....*ahem* "tactical".
Right now I'm thinking if I get a 5.56 pistol I'll get the PCC as an inexpensive range plinker.

Because you can't get inside the bolt. Here is what is required to break it down for a proper cleaning. I've only done it once. It took forever. Now I'll go a few sessions before cleaning it fully. I'm not used to that and my OCD drives me crazy.

I'm toying with the idea of a proper compliant AR-15. But, that looking a little spendy for me right now. I'd love to get a stripper lower and buy the rest of the gun on the "installment plan." That is, buy them parts a few at a time and install them.
