I got another good one. All 17-18 yr olds must enter military for one year upon highschool graduation or upon turning 18. Give all these kids a sense of purpose, discipline and community responsibility before they turn into psychopaths.

I'm not that old and I never would have done stupid shit like that because I know it was wrong and irresponsible.
We trust 17year olds to join the military and make life or death decisions.
I am listening to 21 though. Many of these deranged evil bastards that go on shooting sprees are between 17 and 19. The crux of the matter is, will preventing 18 year olds from being able to buy guys stop anything? If I'm not mistaken I feel like about half of these stories begin with "stole from parents/uncle/grandpa". So if they aren't getting them legally in the first place a law preventing under 21 year olds from buying guns may not accomplish much
Listen I'm open to having a discussion about not letting 18,19,20 year olds buy guns and like drinking 21 is the age. But if we go that route we absolutely have to then raise the voting age and legal adult age. If we can't trust an 18 year old, we can't trust an 18 year old. If we can't trust them to be responsible with buying a gun we can't trust them with other adult things like signing contracts, intelligently voting in elections etc... You're either an adult or you're not. You are either entrusted to have adult rights and responsibilities or you don't.
Raising the age to buy guns to 21 is about the only gun reform that I'm not slamming the door in your face on. But they better be prepared for everything else that should follow with it.

Armed guards, probably not. They will be the obvious first targets and will be dispatched quickly. But a few armed teachers would cause a drastic difference tactically, even if they are significantly less skilled.
Even if it is only 5% that are armed, that means that an attacker needs to react as if any of them could be. He can't just kick in any door with confidence that there will be no return fire.
Even if none of the teachers in the classrooms he hits are actually armed, dealing with the possibility that they might be will slow him down drastically, buying time for people to escape and LE to respond.

A rifle is certainly a major advantage over a pistol.
But the element of surprise is a major advantage as well.
The assailant only gets to surprise the first guy. Every non-uniformed defender gets their own shot with surprise.
At the ranges these things go down I will take a surprise shot with a pistol over a non surprise shot with a rifle any day.

There was a Buffalo News article and it actually said. “Mass killing” and “mass slaughter”. Never said shooter in the entire article. Surprised the hell out of me.
Semiautomatic and automatic firearms have been in existence for more than 100 years. The "mass shooting event" is a relatively new phenomenon, which clearly indicates that the gun itself is not the cause. To further that theory, guns, including select fire models, could be bought and mailed directly to your residence with no governmental controls up until the 1930's. Even after the 1934 NFA, rifles could be purchased and received through the mail. Only after the 1968 GCA did that begin to change. During all this time, "mass shooting events" such as the ones being discussed were non-existent. Acts such as the St.Valentines Day Massacre were extremely rare, and were in fact the genesis for the 1934 NFA. Oddly enough, it was the lack of freedom otherwise known as Prohibition that caused the bootlegging and criminal enterprise that controlled it.
There are many, many facets to the problem. Obvious to me, is the degradation of society at large. This encompasses more than one aspect. The lack of respect for anything or anyone including themselves, the demand that someone's psychosis be accepted as "normal", and the need for external approval ( such as "likes" ) are just a few of these aspects.
The "mass shooting events" began in earnest roughly 30 years ago now. That timeline seems ( to me ) to coincide with "new" methods of parenting. The "Time Out" generation. These children were never spanked, rarely had bad behavior corrected, and were told just how special they were every day. They had few boundaries, and even fewer real consequences for breaking them.
Fast forward to today, those very people that grew up with lax parenting are now parents themselves. They have even less control of their children than their parents had of them, because they were never taught any of what most would consider to be responsible parenting. Wanting only to be their child's best friend, they allowed the kids to do whatever they wanted. Now their children are uncontrollable.
Having had no rules, and little attention paid to them, they sought approval from electronic sources. Video games and internet wormed its way through their brains. Having had government run indoctrination instead of real education, they have no ability to think critically, or even rationally in many cases.
These shooting events are a psychotic's way of seeking approval. They provide infamy. Having never had real personal interactions, the psychotic craves any and all attention. Every one of these killers was a social pariah. Being an outcast drove them to lash out against their perceived opressors. However, the opressors are frequently not the victims of their heinous actions.
The chickens have come home to roost. This problem has been two generations in the making. We won't get out of it overnight, and no legislation will correct it. You cannot legislate morality. We have become an immoral people. Only by returning to respect, honor, truth and wisdom can we hope to change this. Religion provides those qualities to many people, alas, religion has been shunned by and large.

Less people being religious isn't the reason. I kill as many people as I want to every day. That number is 0. You don't need religion to understand that killing people, stealing, etc. is wrong.
I have a question. Would someone tell me how it is that an 18 year old kid whom the media says was mocked for being poor somehow has the cash to purchase a DANIEL DEFENSE rifle one day, then come back two days later and purchase a second AR ? Daniel Defense rifles run in the +/- $ 2500 range. I have not read what the second rifle was, but even a Stag is several hundred. That's over $ 3000, not to mention ammo and mags.
I didn't say you needed religion, only that it provides guidance to many people, but not as many as in years past. Don't put words in my mouth.

Lets throw in minimum income requirements, must be a property owner, psychological exam, references from 10 people, 500 hours of community service, $5000 licensing fee, $100K surety bond, 50 hours of hands on weapons training. That would certainly weed out the psychopaths. Only proven good people should have guns.

At that age, idealism is at an all time high.
There are individuals perfectly capable of living a good life without religion. They are still morally grounded and live by a code of ethics. Many people either from their upbringing or whatever have these values instilled in them. You and others on this forum are examples.
However there are others who for perhaps a multitude of reasons are incapable of doing so and religion gives them a purpose, perspective, guidance, boundaries, morality etc.
All things being the same, the more God fearing people in the world trying to live a righteous life, the better.
In a perfect world you wouldn't even need man made laws because God has laid out how we are to conduct ourselves in our lives but I digress.

Anyways, A friend of mine has three kids and I have to say he is one of the best fathers that I have seen. I have heard him say that a problem with some parents is that they make the mistake of trying to be like best friends with their kids.
Just the other day his boy was pissed off at him. As the pissed off boy walked out of the shop toward the house. My friend said that "if my kids aren't occasionally mad at dad. I am not doing my job as a father."
I just wanted to expand on that part of your post.

These teachers are not thinking of suicide. They are thinking of keeping the bullet from hitting one of their students with the only means left to them. Their bodies.
It is not "mentally fucking ill". It is an instinctive reaction to someone who values another's life above their own and has NO tools with which to protect that other person.

Firefighters will charge into a burning building to save someone even if they do not have the proper gear. Police officers will charge into a collapsing building to save someone even though the likelihood of them succeeding is low. something in them is wired to put the value of a stranger's life above their own. you want to stop that, you might as well depopulate the emergency services.
What we need to do is make sure that these teachers HAVE the tools needed to defend their students without resorting to suicide. We should be GIVING them the tools, the training, and whatever assistance they need.
