My friend who is pretty good with his 5.56 AR thinks he can shoot anything better than anybody, so i bring out the Winchester 1895 in .405 and ask him to shoot his best 5 shot group. The load was a 300gn flat point pushed to 2,200fps. He did hit the target with the first shot.

47 grains? Do you use a ramrod to pound it into the case? My book has 25.3 grains as max load.

Right now I am playing with some 308 loads. I am using a large rifle mag primer and IMR 3031 behind a 168 grain Nosler custom competition bullet. I am loading them longer than magazine length and .030 off the lands for both my 700 and AR 308. Will try them out on the range tomorrow.

Ha ha ha. It was 5 am....so i forgot a 2 and a decimal point. It seemed wrong but could not figure it out through the morning fog.......

I did some chrono work yesterday

357 Magnum
Powder: AA#9
Charge: 13.4 grains
Max: 13.8 grains (Accurate Powders Load Data)
Primer: CCI 550 Small Pistol Magnum
COAL: 1.56" (My lever gun is picky)
Bullet: Xtreme Bullets, 158 grain Hollow Point, Concave Base, Heavy Plate

Outside Temperature: 54 deg f

4" S&W Model 66-3
Ave. Velocity: 1196 fps
Spread: 56 fps
5 shots

20" Rossi 92
Ave. Velocity: 1724 fps
Spread: 83 fps

AA#9 spills out of my powder thrower (Lee Pro AutoDisk), so my velocity has more variation than I like. I might also need to crimp harder.

I used the same recipe with a 125 grain bullet, thinking it would rocket out of my Rossi 92. It actually had LESS velocity than the 158 grain projectile. I am thinking the 125 didn't resist expansion enough to get a clean burn. When I shot the 125er out of my 4" revolver it basically shot fire, with a marginal speed increase over the 158.

Thanks for tha last bit of info. I do like 158 gr over 125 for .357 mag.

Its small but its my new favorite because its so accurate. Very flat shooter......Caliber 204,,,,,,32gr Nosler Ballistic Tip, on top of 29gr of IMR 8208 XBR

Its a chuck killer,,,,dead nut hits on almost every shot out to 300 and I hunt woodchuck paradise. Go through 10 to 20 rnds in an hour out there, since I was 5 years old,,,,47 now

Back in the day, the Savage 250-300 was my favorite cartridge. I thought then and still do that it would make an excellent military round, especially with todays powders. My new favorite is the 6.8 SPC It should have been adopted for the Military, as it is it is a great hunting round.

I could spike it up a bit, but why beat up the gun, it serves me we'll. Besides, its consistently a very tight group at 100 yards!!!!! Now that I've settled that one, its time to move on to my other all time favorite cartridge the 8mm Mauser, I'll be experimenting with Varget and Speer Hot-Cor bullets.
