In any case until NYS's idotic laws are shitcanned, I keep my guns in a locked gun room with dead bolt, and a gun safe; ready arms have a trigger lock with quick code to unlock, IF NOT ON MY PERSON.

As I type, an 870 tactical is next to me on the chair with a trigger lock, as defined as legal by the NYS law.....
Home invaders will be met by.......... HELLER.

I sold an "other" 14" Tact 14 Remington shotgun---too short for my tastes and it was to make sure I was safe, as I type............... from the "MIL OTHERS LAW". Adapt to survive. We all know what time it is.

I believe in safe storage, mostly due to possible burglary when I'm not at home. I'm not concerned about friends or family visiting and messing with my stuff.

I have several long guns as well as a few hand guns... probably nothing compared to what a lot, or most members here have LOL. Anyways, I believe in "out of sight out of mind". Prior to retirement I was involved in the construction trades all of my adult life. My forte was primarily finish and custom carpentry. That said, in homes that I've lived in I have been quite creative with safe/hidden gun storage. Could my toys be located? Sure, a thorough tear it up building search by law enforcement or a sniffer dog could find them. But a burglar, kid, or visitor wouldn't have much luck.

When I grew up (70s-80s) everyone had guns and almost nobody locked them up.
Guns were either in closets, drawers, or the old timer glass front gun cabinets with the etched glass doors.....no locks.
We are talking many hundreds of kids over generations with absolutely zero issues.
Back then when a grown up told you not to touch something.... you didnt touch it....period.
And, all the kids over 10 years old could not only operate the guns but would often be put to work cleaning them.

If you count the front door to the house, then all mine are locked up most of the time too.

I keep most of mine in gun safes, but that's more about storage than security where I am, plus we're home probably 160 hours a week. On average.

I have a pistol and a rifle that aren't in the safe, and my wife keeps a pistol out too.

Other than the two of us, it's just the dog.

The way my dad did it (both the boys and girls hunted) if you touch the gun you clean the gun inside and outside. When my friends were at the house and saw the guns on the wall rack asking to hold one, I would say no I'm not cleaning it just so you can put fingerprints on it. The ammo was in GI ammo boxes just below the guns.

Unfortunately no time for a few months. I enjoy creating hiding places for guns, cash, or whatever. And at some point I'd like to be able to do it for others when asked. Problem is, I have a purchase contract on my current house and I'm busy working on a few house things I agreed to complete prior to the closing. Plus I'm looking for another place to hang my hat that has enough space for my motorcycle and woodworking equipment, that is also affordable. And the way housing prices are, it's more challenging than what I thought it would be. I wanna avoid living in a cardboard box under a highway overpass!! Maybe, hopefully, I can get things up and running again by summer. I'm hoping by June. Feel free to shoot me a message around that time and I'll let you know if I can get to it.

The "unlocked" or "unsecure" portion of this depends on the comfort level of the residents of the home. One of the worst things a household with kids can do with firearms is make them a taboo secret. Curiosity kills the cat. My kids have all grown up with guns all over the house, and have all known since they were little, if you want to see something or hold something, come get me. I will DROP whatever I'm doing. We'll go over the 4 safety rules, and then we'll open any or all of the safes in the house and handle anything you want for as long as you want until you're satisfied. Take the mystery away and teach safe handling, and things will be fine. I've never done it, but I've said for many years that I would feel confident that I could leave a loaded chambered handgun pretty much anywhere in my house and have nothing to worry about re: my kids safety. It's no different than having a toaster oven sitting on the kitchen counter.
