New Federal Union Law?

I received a corporate memo about a new federal law regarding union representation, essentially becoming an opt-out arrangement. I don't know much about this stuff.

It says, currently, unions must file a petition with the federal government to be recognized as representatives of a companies employees.

Going forward, unions can just notify an employer, claiming they represent their employees, and it then becomes the employers responsibility to file a petition with the federal government to fight the claim.

I just got this, and haven't digested it fully yet, but thought it was worth sharing.

It's simply garbage. Just like NY requiring businesses to now make an exemption allowing concealed carry vs. previously allowing it unless posted otherwise.

So, this is the 'democracy' everybody claims is in danger?

Such a change is BS, just for the problems it could cause . Two different groups of employees now just claim to represent all the employees. And it’s the business that will be deciding until the feds say otherwise? As opposed to them making the claim to the feds and let the feds sort it out.
Either side wins . The company could just any employee to make the claim secretly on the company’s behalf from a union member’s point of view. And from the company ‘s point of view, they don’t know who to negotiate with .

It's not new. The National Labor Relations Board (www.NLRB.gov) dictates the steps that one must follow to either form a union or to have an existing union represent those who are not already represented. I would question the organizers, if you are really concerned.

Now that the workplace is a democracy, I vote for less work and more pay!

I used to belong to a public sector union. I worked for about 12 years now without any representation - no shop steward, no calls returned from higher-ups. As soon as the Janice decision came down, I jumped ship. Nobody from my union tried to contact me. I did get a phone call from a guy in Albany who was driving a plow truck. He was unsucessful in getting me to rejoin.
