The US role in Afghanistan was shortly after the Soviet role in Vietnam, let's not forget about that.Russia supported and assisted this country after 9/11 attacks, despite U.S role in Soviet war in Afghanistan. U.S. responded by siding with Chechen separatists.
Even as far back as WWII we were uneasy allies at best.
Russia's problem is that they can't accept the fact that the Soviet Union was a superpower, but Russia is not.
Russia's place on the world stage in the 21st century is on par with Germany or Japan, at best.
They need to learn to let go of the idea that they are a superpower the way that the UK did. Once they do that, then they can thrive.
