Are there any restrictions on Springfield 1903s?

It's my first time purchasing a gun in New York, and I can't seem to figure out the gun laws here.
Are there any restrictions when it comes to buying a Springfield 1903? Like any permits needed, anything needed to be done to the gun etc.

If you have a Pedersen device for your '03 you can only have a 10 round magazine and no pistol grip on the rifle. 5 rounds in NYC.

In regards to NYC.... Other than the need for a permit/license for long guns, why? Is there something on the 1903 that bans it? Isn't it just a 5 round, clip fed, bolt action rifle?

Not that I know of, but OP says it's his first time purchasing a gun in NY, so presumably he doesn't have a NYC shotgun/rifle permit yet.

Why are you considering an M1903 for your first gun? Not that there's anything wrong with that. I have one and it's a beaut. But it seems like an odd choice for a first gun.

Did you just come across a good deal on one? If so, be careful. Some low serial numbered rifles had casting flaws in the receivers. They should not be fired. They could 'splode.

Don't worry no one really understand NY gun laws because they don't make sense and are in contrast to the 2nd amendment, and they are not consistent state wide.

If your outside NYC I think your probably fine. I'm not a lawyer just a guy on the internet. The big hang ups are being SEMI automatic AND taking detachable magazines with baby killing features (pistol grips, flash hiders, fore grips, threaded barrels etc.). A Springfield 1903 would not fall in that category.

An sks with fixed mag even with a bayonet is OK but a highpoint 9mm carbine is ILLEGAL. A mini 14 ranch model is OK but an Ar15 in standard configuration isn't. Makes no sense.

Our laws are idiotic.


I have no idea about NYCs laws. I don't live there and hope to never be forced to go there. But from what I know their laws are far stricter and more restrictive than even the BS "safe" act we are all stuck with.

As long as you have your rifle and shotgun permit, a 1903 is perfectly legal. You just have to transfer it through an FFL.
