Rescues have become the pet stores of today. They bashed pet stores for decades and now buy puppies from mid west dog auctions. The trail has just changed its end point of sale. Albany is only 10 years behind any usefulness with this. Not surprised.

I've always got my pets from some farmer that usually accidentally had kittens or puppies, or did it on purpose just because.

My last dog I got I was driving home from work one evening and I drove by farm where I usually buy my eggs. Sign said, "Free pups".... walked up to the house, and asked about the dogs. Old man took me to the barn and there was a litter of 5 of them. Took the cutest looking one home with me.

Kept an eye on it for a few weeks, then took it to the vet to get some shots (at that time, was like $20-30 -- reasonable), and went on my way. Never really took the dog to the vet, as I had very minimal issues... stuff that TSC/local ag store couldn't fix or got healed up on it's own.

Certainly would not own a dog or cat these days. Even though I live out in the stix, I'd still be afraid a Karen will call the cops in fear of animal cruelty for the dog barking at something stupid on my plot. Plus the vet bills I reckon are stupid high.

My days of owning pets are over with.

On hindsight, I'm waiting for it to be illegal for TSC to have and sell chickens for slaughter/egg laying purposes.

This. I got an orange Maine Coon that was (they think) five years old years back. He's got to be a good twelve years old now. Best cat I've ever had. 15lbs and normal weight. He let's me pick him up and just throw him over my shoulder and I take him places. He's awesome.

But no one in the shelter wanted a five year old cat. But I did.

He already earned his keep and killed a mouse or two.

I’ll come out in full support of this. My wife works with a local rescue and all of our dogs have been “adoptions”. This doesn’t affect reputable breeders; only shops that buy directly from puppy mills and sell for a profit.

I remember taking the kids to the local mall back in the 90s, and constantly seeing sad looking puppies in cramped enclosures in the pet store. It made me uncomfortable then, and I’m glad to see it’s mostly going away now.

Also of note: mutts have a lot less health issues than purebred dogs. We made the switch decades ago after our labs constantly had dysplasia or bloat, it’s genetic. Our lab mixes that we’ve rescued have had none of the same issues and have been on the whole much healthier dogs. I think this law is a win.

I was a member of and was very involved in our local volunteer for animals group for seven years, I was the go-to guy for difficult situations to be resolved.

I'm still involved but unfortunately to a lesser extent now. I don't give the time and resources that I used to, but I'm still involved at my local shelter on a semi-regular basis.
It's an important thing to me. I'm just saying.

I'm not sure if this new law is a good thing or not, there are many variables to consider. I'll have to look into it further. I do not trust the New York state government and its motives to say the least. With that being said, I do find a lot of truth in your post and I tend to agree with you.

Not all of them, but by far most of the animals that I have now and the ones that have passed away over these many years I have adopted. I'm talking about my cats, dogs, rabbits, and a number of my goats.

My chickens are a whole other story. lol.

This falls into the usual relationship I have with Democrats: I support their purported goals, but oppose the methods they want to employ to resolve them - in part because they're the wrong approach, and also in part because their methods rarely achieve the stated goals.

The motivation here was that there's always a flood of people buying pets for Christmas, then dropping them off in a shelter when they realize they're shitty pet owners and can't handle the pup/kitty/whatever. I agree that is a problem, but I disagree with this solution and question how effective it really is.

If puppy mills are the problem, outlaw puppy mills and/or purchase of animals from them, and enforce the law. If puppy/kitty regret is a problem, find a solution for that (perhaps require X days minimum return policy? Not feeling that solution either, but there has to be better solutions than what the Dems put in place here).

Never have bought an animal (unless you count chickens). Most of my pets (all cats) have either been litter runts that no one wanted, strays, or shelter animals. All of them have been amazing to me and fine companions.

Animal welfare is important. But I also don't like the heavy hand of government. I'm all about outlawing puppy mills and such but there should be avenues for reputable breeders to at least advertise in pet stores.

That's a shame. Dogs are one of the best parts of life. I plan on being outnumbered by dogs right up until I'm too old to properly care for them.

The vet bills have gotten absolutely insane, though... you're spot on with that. It costs more for the pre-checkup to get a dog fixed than getting the dog fixed used to cost (and we never used to have a pre-checkup in the first place). Every trip to the vet involves stacks of hundred dollar bills leaving my hands.

But, the dogs are well worth it. Security, companionship, assistance, a playmate, and entertainment... all in one package. Everything we do - even just a short trip to the gas station - is the coolest adventure to them. We all need someone that excited about life around us. Plus they keep me warm at night!

Thank you, I will pass that along. Animals of all kinds, but especially dogs, have always been a passion of hers. Now that she is semi-retired she has the time and really enjoys the work. In our area we have yet to see a goat come up for adoption, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed that we do, that sounds fun!
