Unless I am mistaken, its been my understanding that the tariffs were like an investment in the future, there would be some belt tightening for a while, but in the long run the country would benefit. I think economically the refunds are a bad idea.
But I also think politically they're necessary.
The tarrifs are a necessary tool to offset and discourage other countries taking advantage of us. But the average voter won't support them unless they see a direct personal benefit.
Well, they... the .gov is not going to use the money to lower the tax burden, or the debt; fuck it, give it to the people.

It can be considered a way to "lower the tax burden". If you would have paid 5k bucks in taxes, this year it is only 3k bucks.

lol... no shit, Sherlock. That doesn't make it any less disgusting, and it completely misses the point. The proper answer to a large landmass ruled by a concentration of population is to separate the two to ensure adequate representation of interests.
The reality is that upstate and downstate are more or less equally-sized populations, but downstate plus the upstate members of the Free Shit Army equals liberal domination of an entire populace. The founding fathers understood this to be a significant issue with a representative democracy, which is why they created the senate. New York liberals realized that a similar construct in this state would stymie their agenda, so we essentially have two houses (representation based on population) instead of a house and senate. If the NY senate representation was, say, two senators per county, we'd at least have some leverage in how this shithole is run.
