The whole point of a free market is to determine the proper value of things.

That's why socialism always fails, without a free market the central planners can never appropriately price things.

When you attempt to price things based on feelings you will inevitably screw them up.

So, recycling only makes sense where it's profitable. Where it *isn't* profitable, that means you're wasting more resources to recycle than you were just throwing the stuff away and building new.

I've said this a million times, but here it goes again.

Inmates should be sorting garbage and mining landfills. All food waste should be composted, and they can use that to grow their own food. Anything recyclable sold as scrap to pay guard salaries. Everything left that burns feeds their boilers.

There are some countries that burn their trash for power. We’re too stupid to do that. I do like your conviction plan.

My friends grandfather worked for the county when I was young and still believed recycling was important. He told us when the recyclables at the transfer stations were full and the companies didn't show up to get them, into the landfill they went. I have not given a single fuck about recycling since that day.

It still happens. Most times they never take what they said they will because it’s not financially worth it. Many times things that are labeled as recyclable are not because it’s too costly to do it. Most plastic drink bottles fall into that category.

The State of Massachusetts mandates a five cent deposit. Consumer loses 5 cents. The Store temporarily holds the 5 cents. No win/No loss. .At some point it is required to turn over those funds to the State. No profit for Store. State wins.

When a container is returned to the Store, the Consumer gets the 5 cents back. No win/No loss. Now the Store sells the container back to the Distributor that sold it to the Store for 7.2 cents. Minor incidental profit for Store, or at least an offset. Distributor loses. State = No win/No loss.

But when the container is never returned, the State keeps the 5 cents. State wins. The Store makes nothing, yet must continue to maintain the bottle redemption machines. The Distributor does not buy a container for 7.2 cents - a win.

Obviously, for the Store, 7.2 cents is better than 5 cents. Yet it is in the State's interest that no recycling occurs. Also the Distributor hopes nothing is recycled.

It nothing is recycled, the Consumer lose 5 cents. The State gains the 5 cents. The Distributer is not forced to pay the Store 7.2 cents. The Store continues to support the expense of supporting recycling.

Now, if I throw my deposit container in the Trash, and safeguard my trash, I think the container is landfilled. A win for all but me.

Now my Recycling Bin.

Can goes into the Recycling Bin. Trash Picker arrives. Consumer loses 5 cents. Store pays Trash Picker 5 cents. Store sells to Distributor for 7.2 cents. Consumer loses. Store wins. Distributor loses. Wash for the State.

Or...

Can goes in the Recycling Bin. Trash Picker does NOT arrive. Consumer loses. Store does not sell Distributor Can for 7.2 cents. Store loses. Distributer wins. State wins.

Conclusion:

The Consumer is the obvious loser. It can break even, but never profit.

The Store will likely also lose, as 7.2 cents most likely does not support the administration expenses.

The Distributor always loses; there is no mechanism for it to win. It merely hopes for Stores to present as few containers as possible.

The State may win, although when you take into account the administration, it may lose as well.

BOTTOM LINE:

My Trash Bin is inadequate for disposal of my trash. So I do recycle all I can into my Recycle Bin.

But ... anything but METAL is worthless.

MY PROPOSAL:

Single stream all trash. No deposits nor rules.

Various automated processes, including induction, can easily separate valuable metals from worthless plastic and paper.

The metal is recycled, all else landfilled or preferably incinerated to generate electricity.

RESULTS:

Less effort, Less expense, Less administration.

Materials that can be economically recycled ... are.

Materials that are better incinerated for the generation of electricity ... are.

In NY this year, a bottle return place will need to process 727 refundable bottles per hour to break even, for each minimum wage employee, NOT counting payroll taxes, benefits, etc.

At least 7 paid sick days in NY, right? That's almost 41,000 bottles the NY business has to handle to cover the absence, and another 41,000 for the extra employee to cover the one that is out. So basically 164,000 bottles need to be processed just to cover two employees state mandated sick days.

23,000 people have to drink one soda or beer every single day, and return the bottles, just to cover two minimum wage employees sick days.

Sounds like NY is making people sick, just for a measly nickel.
