Any laws about teaching how to do builds?

So anyone know if there are any laws in this state or on the fed level against teaching people to build ARs or any other gun smithing stuffs?

No, That type of information isn't classified government intel or documentation. You're protected by the first amendment of the constitution. If you wanted to show someone how to build a sheet metal submachine gun in their garage with some extra gun parts you can find on ebay and a cheap welder from harbor freight, you can do that too. Youtube is censoring these types of tutorials however, because they're privately owned and if they don't like your content that goes against their agenda, like the rest of google and facebook, twitter, etc, they'll wipe it all off and ban you.

I'd get an opinion from an attorney before doing this, esp if it will be hands-on actual build your gun type of course for compensation (vs a theoretical here are the steps you should take type instruction). Seems to me argument could be made that you are engaged as manufacturer or assembler of firearms requiring FFL and NYS license if you are building actual guns for compensation. Also would look into liability issues and insurance.

That was only for 80% lowers, I believe.

I heard a similar thing (might be a different case). My understanding was, as you alluded, he got in trouble for basically doing the work himself and charging people for it.

I remember going to a gun show a while back and talking to a guy who said he had all the mill equipment for 80% lowers. Basically lets his buddies and their friends use it for free whenever they want (maybe they buy him beer or pizza or something). Probably the fact that it's free gets him out of it. Either that or just no one knows about it.

Only prohibitation is for completing 80% lowers. People use to do 80% parties which was ruled a no go.

If someone buys a receiver from an FFL and all the parts you can show them how to put it together.

You can only milll an 80% lower for yourself unless your an FFL and doing BG checks. You can’t sell them or do them for others as far as I understand the law.

if your friend has the tools and you and other friends want to do a build .. you all have to learn the tools and how to work them and then do it your self is the new ruling

If teaching gunsmithing were illegal, then you couldn't teach boxing or any (real) MA, etc... You'd have to ban a few hundred years of books, and more. And reserving that right to the "Gov't only" would in my opinion maybe be one of those sparks that ignite something that "they" wouldn't want to deal with.

In California, lol, the purchaser had to press the button on the CNC machine at one time... But if you "instruct" and the other person actually performs the build, I don't see an ice-cubes chance in hell how it would violate anything! 1st Amendment is certainly protected by the 2nd! Lol...

I'm still a bit confused about this. Are you saying you want to do this widespread or just show a few friends how to do it? Like are you thinking instructional videos and classes to strangers or just showing a few of your buddies. If the latter then how would anyone know? I see this every once in a while on this forum. People asking if something is legal when there is no way anyone would know in the first place. We're not to the point where there's an all seeing eye yet.

You'd have to look up laws on teaching a gun smithing class ... Assembly and Manufacture would only if the product is being built by you and sold to someone else. Walking someone through the process of changing their oil doesn't make a legal equivalent of Jiffy Lube.

here is one thing i found out .. you do not have to be a FFL to do gunsmithing .. not talking of doing 80% lowers .. just say AR builds .. every one comes over
with their parts ..
so on that ..
you can show them how to do anything you or they want .. pull the trigger group and put it back in . do a trigger job .. ect ..
you can't keep the receiver ( lower) at your place unless the owner of it spending the night .. they have to take it home with them then come back

the 80 builds they have to operate the mill or drill or what ever equipment being used .. you can instruct them all the way .. just can't do the labor part now ..
