From what I read on another forum, there were two reasons for the 15 round magazine for the Glock 17.

One was constancy at the range requals. Everyone is running the same drill ( the guns go empty at the same time and everyone has to do a reload drill.

Second and main reason. Politics. If they were allowed a 17 round magazine, it would be claimed that they moved to s "more powerful " gun and cries of they carry too much firepower already, and then the city council gets involved. It's the reason they won't change ammo brands. The city council gets involved if they do according to the post

The only exception to the 10 round magazine when the cop retires is one that he qualified on in the last 12 months of his employment. Which means for most, the SAFE act does directly effect them because most would rather carry something other than their duty weapon.

Cops did not make this stupid law and hopefully it will be changed.

I just had to tell a friend of mine that he has to modify to or find 10 round mags for his new Sig because of the SAFE act stuff.

That magazine limit you state,,,dont remember that as being one of the options. I remember that being one of the options for the gun they are legally able to have come retirement. As far as everything I have read, there is no mag limit for cops even after retirement. Could be wrong but this is what I remember reading.

In my opinion, unless you have some seriously large meat hooks where your pinky dangles from the bottom of a 19's grip, you gain no benefit that makes a huge difference by going with the 17 over the 19.

The extra half inch in sight radius and barrel length is negligible at self defense distances at a cost to concealability should you choose to do so.

The free gun is more likely. But remember, their choices were limited. For some they were limited to a Glock 19 or a all stainless steel smith and wesson 59 series( a heavy gun to carry all day). The NYPD digs have rust issues and were periodically pulled from the approved list. People with large hands might not like the two choices that were available and don't want to have pay more out of pocket then they already have for their job. Unlike most departments, the NYPD officers have to buy most of their uniforms and daily uniform equipment including back up/off duty guns, handcuffs, uniforms, etc.

Uniform allowance ? Yes, they get one but it is taxed as income and takes years for it to match the thousands of dollars paid for initial equipment. Back in the early 90's a friend of mine had to lay out 3000 dollars for the equipment before he even saw his first paycheck. He didn't have the money but "don't worry kid, the credit union will give you a loan for the money " and that what he did. It took years to pay it and the interest on the loan.

Just making an assumption that my observation is correct and that every other LE officer in New York State hates the SAFE Act, that means (0.95*33,500) / 61,500, or 52%, of New York city and state sworn officers support the SAFE Act.

I have to agree about the NYPD. Most come from the City, Long Island, Westchester, and Rockland where the average citizen cannot get a full carry. Many of the ones that I've talked to throughout the years way before the Unsafe Act when I worked in the hospital felt that only cops should be armed in public when the subject came up. It's not like they came to this conclusion on their own. It's all they know and all they've been around. Many aren't even aware that the rest of the country is not like NY.

My coworker dated a NYPD gal who we took shooting at Wooster Mountain in CT. When she saw my AR, she shot it but later told my coworker that I shouldn't be allowed to have it. That hasn't been my experience and I hang out with them all the time.

Also remember roughly 40% to 50 %don't live at in NYC. The number of those who live in the city has gotten higher as it has a younger department ( younger in terms of less experience- as oppose to the past) haven't had families and moved out of city tobuy a house yet.

Many have not had experience with a gun or gun owners yet. That will change. And their attitudes will change as they get more time on especially as they see how arbitrary the permit process can be.

And yes there are anti gun cops but a lot of pro 2A cops to cop in that department. Remember the pro 2A cops have lay low because of the politics of those in charge

I had to purchase EVERYTHING when I got hired. I did not get reimbursed for what I paid. Sure, I get a clothing allowance at the end of each year. It is taxed like a bonus is, what is left does not come close to what I need from usage throughout the year.

These guys in NY just want another new, free gun. Nothing more and nothing less.

Which doesn't come close to covering actual expenses, and as Truebeliever already pointed out, is taxed. I just buy my uniforms and such throughout the year and use the little extra in december to cover Christmas gifts. The year I went to Katrina they gave us T-shirts to wear, but all my pants were ruined down there which cost $200+ to replace. What ends up happening with a lot of guys is they just neglect buying equipment because its so damned expensive.

As for the handgun, I switched earlier this year from the S&W I carried for 13 years to the Glock 19. The 17 had just become available and was offered to me but I chose the 19 instead because I can carry it easily on and off duty. My 26 sits in my nightstand now and only gets carried when I'm wearing dress clothes.

Someone on a facebook discussion today from the range regarding timhis article said they almost won the fight over the trigger but the mayor/pc decided against it for political reasons. Anything seen as making it easier for cops to kill innocent black youths is a no-go here. Pardon my french, but that's the truth of how these imbeciles think. I'm so used to it now that it doesn't faze me and even feels strange firing "normal" handguns, but I'll definitely be removing it the second I retire. I'll have 1000 rounds ready for the range that day.

The article makes it sound like that on purpose, but the truth is most just want to turn in the one they have and get a replacement. Even that won't happen though. I'd have paid either way because I wanted to keep my Smith. I carried it for 13 years and it kept me alive. It would be like betraying a best friend to get rid of it.

We're all getting new retention holsters at the next range appearance. Those are free because it's a liability issue for the department and they want it done asap. Replacements after that will be on us of course. I got lucky when I switched to the Glock. A girl at work was retiring and gave her holster and mag pouch to me for free.
