NYS Compliant AR-15

Hi, I am new to this forum and have been searching everywhere for answers, I am looking to make a NYS legal and compliant ar-15 it has a threaded barrel with muzzle brake, pistol grip, and telescopic stock. Would a doing undetachable mag using a cross army safe mag solve all of my problems or would the threaded barrel still be illegal. If an undetachable mag won’t work with the threaded barrel I was thinking about going “bolt action” I have an adjustable gas block as well, if I cut of the gas supply with the adjustable gas block is that enough or do I need to remove the gas tube. If it is bolt action and has a detachable mag can I have all of the “evils” and my threaded barreled would I need both.

With a fixed mag, you don't need to worry about anything else as long as barrel is 16" or better.

Not a very good time to be building.

As best as we have been able to determine this horribly ambiguous law, is you have 2 choices

1- if you want removable mags you need a completely features rifle. Nothing on it. Not even a bayonet lug. Nothing.

2- go with a fixed mag.

It's not pretty, but if you want a detachable mag a spur grip works on just about anything. AKs w/Adapter, ARs, and fits closest to the letter of the law by reducing how much "protrusion" and preventing a full "pistol" style grasp, while lining up fairly close with the action of the rifle. Since NYS hasn't really defined what is or isn't a pistol style grasp, honestly it's anyone's guess as to what is or isn't compliant.

I'll be honest, it's a garbage grip -- but it works and it's cheap. I think, and I could be wrong, the spur has been involved in cases where a crime was committed as well. I believe the Bronx hospital shooter a while back, had one on an AR. The police afaik didn't charge the shooter with assault weapons charges on top of the murder ones, presumably because they found the spur compliant with the spur? I don't know the full case details, so don't take my word on that.


If anyone knows more details about spur cases, by all means contribute.

Also, I'd assume from a liability perspective, the fact you have five modifications shows "intent" to comply a lot more strongly.

Drinkthekooldaid has it expressed best, with a fixed mag it's no longer a "detachable mag" and you can have all the features you want, or you'd have to change just about everything to make it a compliant rifle and have a detachable mag. But, we're not lawyers, and we're not the LEO that still might charge you out of ignorance of the law. So good luck, everyone is taking a risk no matter what with this really bad law. Search is your friend here on what is the best option for "fixed mag". There is a lot of grey and that is terrible for people that are literally trying to do the right thing to comply with the law and not get tied up in a court charge.

I agree fix the mag but do not use the one you mention in your original post as that one is not a fixed mag and as you close the action it’s a fully functional firearm and you insert a magazine. Therefore that type of set up allows a fully assembled and functional firearm to accept a detachable magazine making it illegal. This is the system I wanted until some one pointed this out to me. At first I thought they were nuts and splitting hair but if you think about it it actually makes sense.

I would still prefer featureless vs fixed mag. There are plenty of work arounds to reload through ejection port and different ways to pull back pin if you go fixed mag. I would just want my rifle to function as designed and clear malfunctions, if needed,the way I was trained to.
