Interesting take on the mag lock debacle for those going that route. Not that we would ever know but best guesses as designed, would it be NY compliant as a fixed magazine? What about with a dab of epoxy on the locking tab?

Nobody knows what is compliant until someone gets arrested and is cleared of the charges in a trial.
Until then there are a lot of ways to lock your magazine in and none of them are required to be epoxied or made harder to disassemble than they are.
I always took the stance, If you can’t remove the mag without some sort of disassembly you are good to go. I never epoxied anything and never had any troubles. When I moved I disassembled everything and put it back to “right” then sold all my compliance parts.

there is no reason to think this is anymore compliant than the others out there already.

I am leaning on that not being compliant in NYS. Troopers know how to look at ARs and that thing comes out way to easily.
But as @dsdmmat says no one would know for sure until a ruling came down on it.

Doesn't mean they know for sure, they are doing just like the rest of us, the most they believe is required by law based on how they (or their lawyers) read it. Doesn't mean that they got some magic inside info from NYS saying yup your method is legal or not

There is a reason the maglock isn't being used in NYS for AR sales. The maglock is designed specifically so the magazine can be and remain detachable. It's designed for California's laws, not NYS laws.

There's like a 100,000,000 threads on this already. Some here call it debatable, but in fact, it's really not. The functionality of the maglock with a fully featured rifle is within clear violation of the "detachable magazine" restriction in the SAFEACT. You mine as well not have one on and just enjoy the rifle.

Again, these designs were created for the California loophole. In NYS all this is doing differently over any other fully featured rifle with a detachable mag is it makes it less convenient for the user to detach the magazine. Just because it's now less convenient or adds an additional step to pop out the magazine for normal reloading and putting it back in doesn't all of a sudden make it legal in NYS.

The difference between a "mag lock" and an actual fixed magazine is that, when reloading and using the rifle, in no point is the magazine able to detach, nor is it designed to when reloading. So the functionality of a fixed mag rifle meets the criteria well enough and has been widley excepted for years and years to the point where they're being sold in mass amounts in the same fashion that any other compliant rifle is, whether it has an ergonomic pistol grip, or a tard stock on it.

I would agree this product (i.e., the AR Maglock) "probably" is not GTG within NYS as under routine operation the rifle would be left in a state "with ability to accept a detachable mag" at least some of the time. However, believe this is entirely different product that what's shown in OP. In this case mag does not necessarily detach once upper and lower is separated and believe a stronger argument can be made that rifle is in fact fixed mag as long as rifle is being operated with the product (including shim) is installed. Certainly believe this would be GTG within NYS if shim was epoxied as per OP's second question. Just my opinion of course.

I agree it is unconstitutional, I believe all gun laws are. The current NY law only describes what is illegal and does not give definitions. Therefore it is not easy to determine what is legal. The only way to know 100% is to be arrested and cleared of the charges In court. The idiots who wrote this law never figured on American ingenuity coming up with work arounds to the law.

DD’s ranch doesn’t only sell the parts to convert but if you go to the Hamburg gun show or his shop they sell fully assembled “NYS legal” AR-15’s with his mag lock. Honestly that’s what I use and I’m confident that meets the law.

Op man this one is really tricky. I like this design for obvious reasons but your knocking on the devils door IMO.
Sure does it fix the mag yes but does it make the magazine detachable? I’d say no. I’d say it makes the magazine easily detachable. As some pointed out you can detach the magazine if the gun or action is disassembled? Does what it takes to detach the mag in the case count as disassembly? Not sure on that. I’m sure they could say that’s just maitenance and you’re not actually disassembling the riffle.
As stated I like the design and the ease of going back and forth a lot but wouldn’t do it personally.

I used a lot of mag locking devices. The two I like best were DD Ranch and the set screw through the mag button. I did not apply epoxy to any of them. The set screw in the mag release button was done by drilling and tapping it for a 4-40 stainless steel set screw. Cost all of about 6 bucks to make one. I had about 15 or 20 this way. The DD Ranch cost about 40 bucks with the takedown pins, it was my first crack at the fixed mag and was a solid option.

Yes, I agree, and I'm sure they will close that loop hole in due time. And yes, we don't know if all of these work arounds are legal. We do know that manufacturers are legally selling AR lowers with fixed magazines in a state where many will not send 80% lowers, not based on any law on the books, but a threat of money draining litigation from an out of control AG that obviously has no interest in our constitution, federal or state, and many company's will not send ammo when those that do are actually charging us a tax by the state as though it is a legal transfer.
I have come to actually hate the government of this state.

I never knew of said letter until robin brought it up. All I’m saying is I find this to be compliant for what that is worth. I think you mentioned this type of set up as being widely accepted as complaint too?
I like other set ups better but don’t trust that they are compliant so I have stayed away from them. Heck I like this product a lot better but not sure it meets the threshold IMO.

ds, you no longer have to worry, is the epoxy dollop necessary or not, for those still in the gulag, it is probably a good idea.
Seems there was a shop over by Brockport that was fixing mags without the epoxy and the state super citizens made him turn over, under threat, the names of all the customers he sold them to so they could bring them in for the epoxy treatment.
So all the contentious nonsense form those that thrive on angrily picking the fly shit out of pepper on virtually every subject, to this date, it is still a legal work around.

I am sure there have been cases already that have been tried, but if they are not reported than we have no idea of the outcome. I always hear that we have to wait till someone is arrested and has their day in court. But how do we know hasn’t happened already? Maybe they are keeping us in the dark on purpose? I dunno. While we argue about what is complaint and what is not, there is really no clarity. NYS likes it that’s way. Keep the laws difficult to interpret and obscure so they can operate arbitrarily.

Nope that's where you are wrong, Robin knows and New York has approved a few ways.. granted none of us have actually seen or heard of the approvals from the state but Robin must be buddies with the Staties or Cuomo himself and got an inside look.
