I need some (alot) of help with Broadheads for crossbow hunting.

No, no I don't. I want either Rage or Muzzy. Not sure I understand what is said by DEC in regards to illegal heads.

Help me out if you please. Best if you can tell me EXACTLY what to buy. Thanks

This was a point of review in the hunter ed class. Short story, nothing with "barbs" that face backwards. I prefer 3 fixed blade broadheads. Muzzy are my go to.

I looked at those pictures in the DEC book and got confused.

but it was a great deal. I bought 6 rage hypodermic broadheads at cabelas with a case for $39.00. They are $25 with no case for three broadheads everywhere else.
Some reviews say they don open but I was told people install the collar wrong a lot of times. I made sure to read the directions.

I suppose NY wants the arrow to be able to be pulled out of the deer (by brush, etc) if it's a bad shot/non-lethal. That's why they don't want barbs, or mechanical heads where the blades do not fold forward after initial release. A crossbow bolt is usually going straight through the deer, but they don't seem to consider that.

NYS legal mechanical, because once deployed the blades will pivot back towards the front, thus are not 'barbed'.

Exactly. Be sure to line up the arrows, so the back of the broadhead blades are between the notches on the collar. That part of the collar snaps off on impact and the blades open outward.

You can rotate and get 3 uses per collar.

You rotate the collar until the back side of the blades are BETWEEN the notches on the collar...do NOT line up the collar notches behind the blades.

Also you will see small notches on the back of the blades when in 'flight' position. These "lock" into collar and hold blades into flight position. Keep an eye on these these as you tighten broadhead onto arrow shaft.

Be extremely careful handling blades, they are scalpel sharp.

Ordered practice heads today but I could only find 125 grain and I’m using 100 grain broadheads that’s life I guess.

Another tip if you want it, once your scope is dialed in, either shoot one arrow per bull or back up to at least 30 yards to increase group size and save from arrows striking each other and tearing up arrow fetching. Yes, they're that accurate.

Best accuracy means equal tension on both sides of string when cocking. I use a rope cocking device, and cross the ropes below the t-handles before I pull up. This keeps the pulleys tight to the stock, so the force is even on both sides of the string.

I was aware of the cross bows being so accurate you can damage your aero s. I bought a 4 target bag for crossbows up to 425 FPS and I’ll site it in at 10 yards then move to 30 yards as recommended. I’ll do one bolt at 10, pull it out, and check again. I’ll do the same for 30 yards. Of those are good I’ll shoot 1-2 bolts at 20 yards. My property is very brushy so 20-30 yards is my max until I can cut some more shooting lanes. That will be next season though. I’m just jumping into this so thanks again for the help. I don’t have a muzzleloader so this will be my muzzleloader to extend my season. Also a good deer spot is close to an occupied dwelling so this will allow me to get closer to that spot.

I'll make a suggestion that took me a little to figure out. While I'm accurate enough at 40 yds with a bow, practice at distances that are realistic based on the area you've chosen. It's great to practice at 30 or 40 yards, but if 20 yards is your longest shot, practice at that range. Especially if using a pin setup on a bow, or a drop compensating scope on a xbow, I find my muscle / eye memory taking me to where I practice at. Many decisions you think you'll make are forgotten when the target walks up on you.

I agree. I’ve read this in many articles too. They say crossbows are clear to 50 years but as you said I’ve got 50-60 feet max for my area. I’ll site it in at 10, 20, and 30, but 20 will be my go to practice range. Next year I’ll get some lanes cleared as I feel it’s too late in the season to do so now.
I watched a few hunt videos today to see how Dee react when being shot and how the arrow reacts when it hits a deer. Very hard to get any consistent conclusions as I thought. I’m hoping I can peg one coming down the hill from the nightly field off to the right of my stand so I have a good angle. That will be about 40-45’ so that should be perfect if it works out that way. Never does but that’s life.
