Reality is carrying a gun is not meant to be comfortable, but rather comforting. Out of the dozen or so ways to carry, I've found that pocket carry to be the least intrusive.
Spicoli - to the best of my knowledge, you should be able to join Tonawanda Sportsmen Club during the summer. Be advised however that it will be a bit more costly than Niagara Co Sportsmans. Good luck.
Tonawanda Sportsmens Club on Killian Rd in Pendleton is nice. They offer a restaurant clubhouse, trap and skeet, rifle, indoor and outdoor pistol. Also this year added Steel Challenge events. The regional action pistol club also operates out of there.

What you're describing is not that unusual for the 617. I have one with thousands of rounds thru it and have used it for steel challenge. Regular cleaning will be your friend. I simply use my favorite solvent coupled with a nylon toothbrush.
