Best advice I've received is to find out what brand and type ammo the local PD carry, and use that. Apparently it may be an advantage should you have to deal with the court system due to a self defense situation.

It appears you're fine carrying a loaded pistol in your vehicle through both states, no need to separate ammo and gun, lock gun in box, etc. IL does require that it's locked in a box if you leave the vehicle unattended. I would suggest dropping a couple of dollars on the CCW app for your phone...

I would assume that only DL or state-issued ID showing residence would be acceptable to these assholes? Yes, I agree 100% that a CCW is valid ID but it does not prove residence since, as you point out, one can obtain a non-resident CCW.
