New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed into law Tuesday legislation that will allow courts to order the temporary seizure of firearms from individuals deemed a danger to themselves or others.

"This law is sensible and balanced. It is a good public safety measure. If it saves even one life, and it will, we will have done good work here."

Too bad they don't enforce all laws equally on that basis.

"If it only saves one life" Then why aren't breathalyzer ignition interlocks mandatory on all automobiles? Been drinking? Car won't start. That would save many more lives than any of these gun laws. False positive and you can't start your car? Oh well, if it only saves one life it's worth it. There is no 'Right" to drive a car as opposed to a right to keep and bear arms or right to due process.

I have more of an issue with the lack of Due Process than I do with 2A violations.

If someone is such a danger to himself or society, there should be a quick moving court system to deal with these people. The lack of Due Process should be the worry of all Americans.

I wouldn't put my faith in the court system, ask any male with kids in a divorce.
Autos with lockouts would save lives, the drunk who was going to drive and anyone in its way (see I used non binary).
The lockout would need to be smart so a non drinker couldn't start the car for them.

Ahhh yes fresch. However common sense (not so common), a sober person would think twice about sending a drunk off behind the wheel of a car. If you and a friend were out having a few drinks, you also would be unable to start it for him. So many lives saved! This would also negate the need for sobriety checkpoints which are borderline violations of the 4th and 5th amendments. Thus freeing up Police to work on more important crimes. My original post shows the absurdity of the "if it saves only one life" statement. This technology exists and is utilized for multiple DWI offenders. Why then is it not mandatory safety equipment in all automobiles? It would make a real, significant, quantifiable difference in the incidence of DWI related fatalities. Because there is no profit margin for the state in preventing it. There are no impartial studies showing that the ever more restrictive gun laws have any effect on crime/murder rates yet we are under a constant barrage of legislation to further restrict our rights. The rulers don't care about safety or saving lives only oppressing the populace.
