None of that matters. Does he have the right according to the law or not is the question? Are the cops enforcing a "feeling" policy? Hell my Dad told me how in the 50's 60's kids would bring guns on school buses for hunting. School bus drive would drop them off after school to some field to hunt. Can be if you have prior notice from the owner of the property that it's not allowed.
But the cop would need to know about that notice, he can't just pretend it's illegal because *he* doesn't like it.
He can't even say "I know the owner wouldn't like that".

I don't believe there's even an exception for protected classes for trespassing.
Someone could put up a properly worded "no blacks/gays/muslims/whatever" and those people could still be charged with trespassing, right ?
They could sue the property owner civilly (maybe, depending on the property ?), and a judge could order the owner to take down the signs (maybe ?), but that doesn't mean they couldn't be charged with trespassing while the signs were still there ?
A wise person once told me, just because you "can" doesn't mean you "should"
