Curious rimfire ratshot question.

Let's say you have a piece of shit single shot .22 and shoot ratshot out of it. Patterns like shit, due to rifling. I know it's not legal to ream the rifling out of the barrel, but what if you made a new barrel without rifling? It's not "remaking" or modifying the original barrel lol.
Still no go, right?

Well isn't that some shit, didn't know that. Did some searching and looks like they were quite rare. Can't imagine trying to find WMR shotshells. Also see that Henry make a lever garden gun. Both cost way more than their worth to me.

Why would reaming out the barrel make it illegal as long as you aren't changing the length or defacing the serial numbers or cutting down the stock and wally world shelves use to be over flowing with ratshot ammo.

I thought I read some discussions a while back that basically modifying a rifle into another firm of firearm (ie..to a shotgun) was frowned upon by uncle ATF.
I use to see some .22lr ratshot around but never seen any .22 WMR ratshot.

If it is gtg with the ATF I just may aquire a POS single shot to ream out for killin rats. WMR would be even better.

They are ment for close range, 5 yards and in. They can work petty well if close up. Even if you can shoot a tighter group you won't gane anything other then a few more hits. Perfectly legal to have no rifleing just make sure the barrel and oal are rignt.

garden guns have been made as long as rifled ones werd. I have a nice old Remington model 33 smoothbore.

Close range rat killin is what I'm doing now. Number of hits isn't the problem, the crazy spread is. Just looking for a better pattern.
They may have been made forever but this is the first I've actually heard of.

Yep, this. I know there wasn't any state penal code, thought I read something to do with ATF having issues with doing it.
Along the lines of "remaking what started as a rifle".
Like taking an AR and making a pistol. Good to go if the lower wasn't a rifle at first.

22, 25, 32,38,40,44, 45 and even a 50. All good

For this my choice would be for a magnum over a long rifle 22, you may still have the spread but you should have more velocity per BB.

I dont know what the fed statute is, pretty sure I read something about modifying them. Going from rifle to shotgun. Not even sure where I would start looking in their mess of regulations.

Yes, rats only. We get them from a neighboring farm. We leave no food around outside, no animal feed of foods. Garbage is kept up neatly. Yet the fuckers still come over.
They have cats all over by their barn but apparently they're not doing their job.

If they aren't fed regularly cats don't hunt as much. Personally, I'd rather pick rats off with a pump up pellet gun.

I have a pellet gun I've shot a lot with too but took my NV scope off it now that coyote season is here. I put my Holosun on the pellet gun but haven't had a chance to sight it in yet.
I kinda like shooting them with the .22 shot especially when the little fuckers are on the run.

So just talked to my gunsmith buddy. He thinks it would end up opening the barrel up too far, wouldn't be just the rifling, and would have a problem with gas passing the shot and loosing a lot of velocity.
Wonder if any barrel manufacturers could do a blank cheap enough seems they have much more tooling.

Just be careful, Shotguns have minimum barrel lengths of 18 inches.

Ream a .177 barrel to .219 it should work.
