Hunter shoots, kills woman after mistaking her for a deer, officials say

Here's a local story I saw on fox news.

I freely admit, I've never gone hunting. I have nothing against it though.


This story is an Absolute tragedy and totally preventable. Very sad.

How does this happen??!! How do you not absolutely know 100% what your shooting at and apparently she was even in someone's yard!

This looks like Extremely bad judgement and negligence.

200 yards is a long shot with most pistols for most shooters. It is possible he shot at a deer closer to him, between him and the woman, and missed but the shot hit her. Mind you, that is not an excuse just an answer to your question as to how it might have happened. Of course, if he made the 911 call within a few minutes of him shooting her and if the info is right that the 911 call was made 40 minutes after sunset, then he was poaching and doing so when there was not sufficient light to be sure of either his target or what was beyond it and that is another way it could have happened. Sad situation no matter how you look at it. Bad judgment no matter how you look at it. Criminal too quite possibly and my guess is he will be charged.

Total tragedy and completely preventable. This will give all hunters a bad name and be grist for anti-hunters, anti-gun, and PETA people. Nice going douchebag. Just had to have that trophy (and how the hell do you mistake a human being for a deer).

I'm a hunter and I've passed up on many a deer because I wasn't sure if it was a buck or a doe. Gave up some fine trophies because of my discretion too. And I definitely would not have shot it I wasn't 100% sure that it was an deer and not a human being.

Crappy situation for the family of the deceased and will continue to fuel the anti-hunter/anti-gun fire.

I would not have expected someone being shot in the hip and dying from the wound in the great majority of cases. Makes me wonder was an artery severed or did the bullet or a fragment ricochet off of bone and hit a vital organ. Of course, I guess that it may have been quite the while before she received medical attention if it was a remote area and even with pressure applied - she could have bled out even if an artery was not involved.

This makes me ponder whether I should continue to chance hunting on public land by myself. Scary stuff to realize there are 'hunters' out there who would cause something like this to happen.

A femoral artery wound is very deadly. Although most hunters don’t specifically shoot to hit the femoral artery I have seen the actual results of several deer hit in the femorl artery. They bleed out extremely fast.

Couple of national media outlets are having a field day with this, demonizing hunters and in conjunction the 2A community. Hunter was a damn incompetent idiot, no different than a libtard texting and driving. Libtards, never letting a tragedy go to waste.

there is no excuse for this crap .. and there are a few other threads on here on this shooting ..

back in the early 80's i could hunt small game alone , i was in my teens .. left the house to go rabbit hunting .. walked the creek bank on the side of the farm
field looking for bunnies .. walked a good 400 yards up the creek / field and then worked it back .. came to a big brush pile .. looked around .. ok if bunny shoots out i have this and that area to shoot .. kicked the brush pile with foot .. ( single shot 20 ga , hammer back ) ready to rock in roll .. bunny flies out , pull up the gun ..bead on the bunny ...got the lead on it ..... WTF !!!!!! gun straight up it the air .. bunny just ran between the front legs of our German shep dog .. .. mom let her out after i left to hunt .. not a shot fired . how fast do bunnies run .. what was my reaction time .. to call that shot .. splitting seconds i say .. no excuse on this crap ..

I've been following this story, along with the 1 about the idiot who shot the brown truck because he thought it was a deer!! There is no excuse for these type of incidents to happen. Both of these idiots need to deal with the consequences of their negligent actions.
This 1 took a life through his carelessness, and the other could have!

Thats what scares me about hunting, that some idiot who has never seen a tree before could be out there near you stumbling through the woods shooting at sound, calves, dogs, etc. Some businessman who hunts once every three years and takes his gun to a gun shop because he doesn't know have to take it apart to clean it.

Try living in the Southern Tier. “Buffalo Hunters” have been known to show up at checkpoints with cows tied to the bumper.

Back in the early 80's we pulled into a deer check near Walton and they had a guy with a pony strapped to his car.The guy didnt speak english,was a Polish immigrant.My buddy speaks Polish so he translated for them.Turns out the guy lived down the block from me in Bklyn.Guy said he actually shot another one that ran away so he shot this one.Said the other 4 "deer" just stood there and watched him gut it.How do you say "pollock"?
