I hope it was a training issue - it's a small town with a SWAT team. And they may well have a training philosophy that if you didn't yet complete the door kicking class, you don't kick doors. You secure as far as you can, contain, and wait.
This forum regularly lampoons people who think they're going to clear their own house after watching a youtube video.
These cops protecting the parking lot may well be a product of that, right or wrong.
I don't expect the "save their own kids" thing to be true. I do expect they removed as many kids as they could without getting shot at. The rest would be left to "shelter in place". Again, if you don't have the "door kicker" merit badge, you don't kick doors. You secure, contain, and wait.
If both of those expectations were the case, then in some ways it wasn't as horrid a response as is said. They did go in, save who could reasonably be saved per the risk level of their training. If that's true, the wheels came completely off when their training insisted their magic SWAT team would show up in 5 minutes, which would never happen IRL since they're all working side jobs, or playing golf.
I only bring this up from all the terror response stuff I've gone through, and moreso, hazmat response. IF these guys trained with the same... skillset hierarchy? approach as terror and hazmat, then you operate within your skillset and defer stuff above it, to those that have the skillset. I was well trained to lead a 1st due crew to an anthrax terror event, and even run the incident. But that training included a very big line about dealing with the anthrax itself, as an example. I was absolutely trained to lead a crew into rescuing people exposed to it, etc. But anything beyond that, we were all trained to defer to hazmat techs. Same with sarin gas, same with bombs.
For the sake of those cops and fed marshals defending the parking lot, I can only hope that something similar is the case. "Save their own kids"? Maybe saved every room except for the ones where the shooter could wreck anyone who stepped into the hallway, or something. I have trouble believing that some badge walks into a room, grabs exactly his kid, and the rest agree to stay there, lol. More, how would they know which room their kid was even in.
No, I hope they got people out based on the risk level of their training, then "contained" until the merit badge crew showed up. 90 minutes later.

Any religion that the individual has or needs.
It is not about disrespectful comments about ones faith, it is about the faith they have or do not have.
As for being man made, whether you have faith or not, cannot be proven or disproven.

Police don't have a duty to protect. Was determined by the courts a while back.

The newest estimate for firearm ownership is about 434 million with a death rate of 45 thousand with over half, 24k being suicide and 19k being used in homicides. A significant portion of that related to criminal gang activity.
No stats on autos used in suicide, homicides or criminal gang activity but clearly if firearm ownership is a national health issue then so is automobile ownership.

Knowing everything we know about previous mass shootings it's incomprehensible they had an entire police force wait outside for over an hour. They cared more about confronting panicked parents who were willing to risk their lives to rush the gunman unarmed than they were to stop the shooter and save the children.
This goes against everything that we've learned how to respond to these. This goes against every shred of human compassion to do nothing while kids were being slaughtered and bleeding out.
This is unimaginable cowardice large scale shirking of duty.
There is no explaining this away. It is what it is that police department is a pathetic embarrassment that doesn't deserve to exist anymore.
The buffalo PD did it right they immediately went in and confronted our loser. They saved lives.

No one was around when he showed up on site. No resource officer was there.
The guy crashed his truck into a ditch and just walked in through an unlocked door.
After he started shooting in the school it sounds like a couple officers went in and when this monster stopped killing kids for a minute and started shooting at police the police retreated out and then just set up a perimeter and left him alone with unarmed children and teachers while he slaughtered them over the next hour without attempting again to stop him.
That's as best as I am able to gather based on current information.

Crashed his truck and shot at a couple people at funeral home. Police called, took a couple shots at school from outside. Roughly 12 minute window before he entered school unobstructed. I can't keep track of links.
Then it sounds like at some point when local pd responded they took fire and decided to setup perimeter and call for backup. Who knows what happened during this time, but border patrol put an end to situation at almost 90 minutes into it.
Doubt anyone will ever be scared of swat steam after this; let alone the Barney Fife locals.
