He may already have a few 22s and 17s. I bought some 22 hornet when FUAC started this Unsafe deal. Open to suggestions.

Mini 14? Move him up to a nice centerfire to get him started with semi auto. In the end you'll know him best. If he's frequently shot up to 22 hornet, I think something in 223/556 is a pretty logical next move. If you want to take him hunting and he's interested in it a .243. if he had interest in competing in some sort of competition maybe get him a gun better suited for that. Maybe if he likes clay sports, a 20 gauge, or a 12 if you think he can handle it. I think that pretty much covers all the bases. In the end you'll know what's best stored for him.

If he has any interest in small game hunting or clay birds get him a bennelli. Those guns are so well made his kids will enjoy shooting them. My father bought one in the 90's and it's still my favorite shotgun. When it's goose season if he's not going I will take his gun it's that nice.

If he likes shooting clay a 20 gauge over under fits the bill, and you could definitely get one that he'd be proud to hand to his son and grandson one day. Pieces of family history like that, you would then be a part of many generations onwards. I think that would make a special gift from father to son.
