The misconception is that it takes less force to stop than to kill.

Typically it takes much much more.

Anyone who's ever hunted large game knows that a killing shot is much easier to manage than one that will drop the animal quickly.

In a self defense situation you don't want the assailant to bleed out in an ambulance after having killed your whole family.

You don't actually care if he lives at all, but you absolutely need him to stop what he's doing immediately.

In that case, a shattered pelvis that he survives is better than a ruptured liver that kills him 10 minutes after the shot.

But a shot that immediately stops and *isn't* fatal is very low probability.


It's like the hollywood trope of knocking someone out with a blunt strike to the back of head. It's possible, but even if you're an expert, you have about a 5% chance of pulling it off without killing the guy.
