I think I have my choices narrowed down to a ppsm2, xds9, p10c and g19.

I think the ppsm2LE is on sale for around 399 and Springfield has a promotion to give 3 free mags.

I thought it was interesting to see the 2 single stacks with their 8rd mags are just as tall as the g19 is. I didn't expect that

PPS i hear is pretty good, but why not get the extra 2 rounds if its about the same size as a G19 so can't go wrong with a G19 but then again the 10c is supposed to be awesome, (lot of places are starting to come out with a decent amount of aftermarket support, but never as much as a Glock.. also have you looked at the SW M&P 2.0 compact?)

I'll help you out even further. The Glock 26 and and the Sig 365 hold the same amount of rounds (10+1) and their grips are shorter. The longer the grip, the harder to conceal.

I don't know why people say that. My lady shoots the 26 just fine. It's the only gun she's ever known.

That's definitely a concern of mine. Being anew shooter I want to practice and become proficent and enjoy it along the way so I am looking for a larger grip surface.

with that being said the 26 can take 19 and 17 mags thus giving you a larger grip. honestly unless you plan on carrying anytime soon get a 19 or 17 size gun, take some classes work on some drills get proficient, save up for the other expensive parts as well, aka dont forget about looking into your belt and holster (hell if you go the glock route get a holster set up for a G26 with an open end and then you can run a 26 a 19 and a 17 or even a 34 in the same holster) then get the smaller carry gun (there should never be any issue with a 19 size for daily carry unless you need deep deep concealment tbh) now you have a nightstand gun and a carry gun or do the whole winter summer carry guns

I don't know why people say that. My lady shoots the 26 just fine. It's the only gun she's ever known.

Depends on hand size. My wife has small hands and despises the grip on the Glock 19 and 36. With the palm swell, they are just too wide for her. She cannot close her grip effectively and the pistol turns in her hand when she fires it. She much prefers the width of a single-stack 1911 (including 45acp) to the double-stack Glocks. She really likes her P238, P938, and Browning 1911s in .380. The Glock 42 and 43 fit her fine. She has no problem with the grip size of the XDS 9mm, but she thinks that the texture of the grip is too aggressive.

Of the choices you have listed I would choose the G19. The XDS9 is well built but I cant warm up it it, and it is heavy.
I think a G19 size will allow you to more quickly develop your skills. It would also be the easiest to sell or trade.

I think the hardest thing about buying a first pistol is trying to buy one that is good for everything and thats why I recommended buying 2 pistols.

Now if you want to try to get a jack of all trades pistol take a look at the FNS compact, it is a between a G19 and G26. If you want some more info about it let me know because I have some experience with it.

Doesn’t anyone carry a .40 cal?? My EDC is a G27 in a OWB Sidegauard leather pancake holster. Grip size no problem little finger goes up under mag well just fine. With little finger off grip I don’t Glock left as much as I do when firing my G22 & 26. Recoil is no problem. Just my .02 of an inch.

I own and carry a .40 shield the recoil isn't bad, its heavy for its size and I can get a full grip with extended mags . it does takes a bit of practice to shoot a pistol with a grip that is narrow if I could go back I would choose to get the 9mm shield.
That being said I shoot my 9mm CZ much better . I prefer to carry the CZ most of the time but its nice to have a smaller pistol you will have days when you dont want to have a larger gun stuffed in your waistband. In tge long run you are probably gonna wind up with a compact and sub compact.

Yep. You gain nothing with modern defensive ammo in .40 compared to 9mm except the loss of 1 or 2 rounds and added recoil.

Only use it has is being able to make a magic number to put someone into major power factor much easier than 9mm and a non custom worked up gun. And extra pressures can actually assist in a compensator.


So yup .40sw will hopefully soon become the new .38super

I know many are on the FBI 9mm bandwagon but remember they made a choice to change based on more criteria than terminal effectiveness. Cost of training, capacity, and compensation for poor marksmanship skills were part of the equation.

Here in the land of FUAC 10 round limits if you were to carry a G19 sized pistol in .40 you would have 11 more powerful bullets I dont see the downside to that.

I run a full sized 1911 in .40 S&W (P16-40) besides the XD40 subcompact it is the only .40 I own. The 1911 is fun to shoot the XD is only fun to shoot with the extended mags in it.

Not sure if looking at a test of one load is a good test of power or effectiveness. When looking a test of several loadings in both calibers I notice few things. https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/self-defense-ammo-ballistic-tests/

I run a full sized 1911 in .40 S&W (P16-40) besides the XD40 subcompact it is the only .40 I own. The 1911 is fun to shoot the XD is only fun to shoot with the extended mags in it.

I agree, in a subcompact the recoil of the .40 is a little much for me. A few guys I shot with have hands strong enough to where it is not a problem. They can shoot a g27 as well and as fast as a g26.

If you haven't held the M&P 2.0 compact like someone mentioned, you should give it a shot. Not too big, not too small, great feel, grip, and nice trigger.

I can vouch for the P10c as well. Most accurate pistol I own, and I shoot it way less frequently than some others I have. Only thing I don't like about it is the grip can be a bit rough on your hands.

My first pistol was an xds9 4.0 and even thought I find myself carrying my J frame more I still carry and shoot the xds when I want more rounds. I think with it being a smaller pistol it was a little harder to shoot at first but as with anything practice makes perfect. Whatever you get just shoot it as much as you can.

With that said the P10c looks like it would a sweet pistol and I want one.

I don't like short stubby grips on any model handgun for "better ease of concealment". I want all fingers being used with a full purchase when I go to grab the gun VERY VERY quickly. I want as much contact as possible. I need to get the shirt ripped away and the pistol grip in hand so it can be deployed at the same time. There is NO tactical advantage to having a smaller grip to compensate for printing a little bit which isn't nearly an issue so many people make it out to be. I'd rather have a full sized frame and shortened barrel or a neutral sub compact that does not have a shortened grip and reduced capacity for defensive carry. Get a model with a neutral frame size or reduced length barrel so it can be canted as needed inside the waistband and won't get in the way of anything ever. You can go about doing everything you would in everyday life without the complaining and whining.

Part of carrying and training should also include being fit enough to carry in the best way possible. If you can't carry certain handguns or in certain areas, you're just effectively compensating and reducing advantages when you do need to deploy the gun. It might be worth getting rid of that beer belly to try a more effective and quicker way to carry.

Yes, a range buddy carries one. The grip feels great and it shoots great. The only thing about it is the magazine release is on the trigger guard, its not bad just different. The few guys I know that have a pistol with that style release now prefer it. Also the cost of the mags is high I think.

About $40ish I believe, but hk has done deals (buddy got an adult size vp9, came with 3 mags) were they do mail in rebate for 4 free mags.

Cost may come down with HK talking of opening a US plant

I have a VP9 sot the mag release would be no problem . Take it out for a few day at the range and one gets use to it ... Now I don't need another handgun .....Want is another story
