To reload now or wait???

I’m driving myself nuts thinking about all this crap coming down.
I used to reload and I still have everything ready to go for 9mm but…….
Do I buy at the stupid price of 33¢ a round while I can still get it or reload?
Reloading supplies are bought and paid for so I can do it at 13¢ a round

I am buying for now. The prices for projectiles and primer scarcity have convinced me to buy my practice rounds and keep the brass for now. I too have a stock pile of stuff but primer replacement at 14-18 cents is a little crazy for now.

I’ve Got 6000 primers but they are the hardest thing to find. Someone here was selling 1000 primers for $100. I should have bought them

I have and have accumulated a considerable amount of supplies for various calibers, even ones I do now shoot or own.
Everything is paid for whether I assemble them or not, so it really doesn't matter the cost per round NOW as I'm not likely to sell and replace what's already been bought.
For Rifle, I do fully prep Brass including priming it so that if I want a specific Load all I really have to do is drop the powder and seat a bullet.
Dead of Winter is a great time to batch out Brass... hundred or so cases a night and before long you've tumbled everything you own, then prepare the cases, (I like to re-tumble them after doing all the work to get them clean and free of brass flakes) It takes a lot of time to end up with pristine ready to load cases but having them there is really handy.

That is about 1-2 months of shooting for me. That is why I buy the ammo right now. Once I see primers back on the shelf I will buy them and reload. That way it is 1000 in for every 1000 out.

I'm mostly working off reloading components I've got stockpiled. I can't remember the last time I bought ammo other than 22 or shot shells.

I follow the philosophy of never reloading the common calibers unless their is a shortage of some kind. I have thousands of 9mm cases prepped and ready to go. With the Hornady progressive I can churn a ton out. I have yet found the need to do so in the name or conservation. With the price of primers, it is still cheaper to buy the ammo loaded. Plus the primers can be used for the ammo that is actually expensive regardless. I rather use small pistol primers on 38 special over 9mm. To each their own I guess.

Those prices are now prices. My supplies are from a few years ago. Last time I bought power I paid $110 for 8lb jug of Red Dot. Primers were $30 per 1000 and projectiles were $65ish per 1000.
oh and I never bought casings. Just used range pickups

I been reloading everything using my supplies, I'm not worried about replacing them (except maybe large PP). Buy it cheap and stack it deep, I truly do have a lifetime supply and I hope that will be another 20 years.

My $.02 :

If you can afford to do so, buy your ammo now. BUT, you should also be buying components to load with. Buy enough components to load every piece of brass you have TWICE. If you have 2000 rounds of ammo and another 1000 pieces of brass for that cartridge, you should stockpile enough components to load 6000 of those rounds. That may be impractical for certain cartridges, but for your main cartridges, I consider that a minimum.

Try to use any given powder for more than one caliber. Using any one powder in multiple cartridges makes lean times easier. I'm not saying that you shouldn't use the best powder for your developed load, just that you should have a backup load that uses another powder that you currently use somewhere else. Versatile powders may not be perfect, but when components are scarce you will have something to fall back on.

Stockpile the things that you can barter with. Did you find a few bricks of primers at an estate sale that you don't have a use for ? I guarantee someone else has a use for them. They don't go bad ( assuming proper care ) and you don't have to feed them.

When you find that you have 1/2 as much brass as you have loaded ammunition, it's past time to load that brass. Having 6000 pieces of brass does you no good at crunch time, even if you have the components to load it. Don't let your brass build up too much. It becomes a daunting task to load, especially if it involves trimming.

I assume the poster brought this question up in regards to the ammo background check nonsense. This would be their second go around with this. Something tells me it will fail again. Even if they manage to implement it, most gun shops will just stop selling ammo. I have bought ammo from different sites, including gunbroker, and had it shipped to my door. I will continue to do that. Worse case, there will be many trips to PA. I refuse to go through some arcane background check to buy ammo. Reloading is also a plus, but many don't do it.

One thing I haven't seen discussed here is surplus or pull down powders. I've gotten some great deals over the years from Jeff Bartlett reloading and some other places. The last I bought was some BR5 (for 9mm )14 pounds for (not sure but I believe) $200. but that was also pre-crunch. I see he still has some but its now $150 for 7lbs. plus shipping.
I also have had good luck at American Reloading, I bought a lot of new /surplus powder that works great in .223. Good luck!

I've reloaded everything. I've even reloaded 22LR. I keep a plethora of empty brass and bullets. Even in calibers I don't own in case someone needs some ammo in an emergency. Great bartering tactic.

I have stopped reloading 9mm right now because small pistol primers are hard to get, but ammo is on the shelves.

I do have plenty of powder, primers, bullets, and casings, it's just to restock the primers is what has me a bit in a bind. I'd rather have them there in an emergency, then use them up and be SOL.

Unfortunately I may need to go out of state to get primers later on this year if I can't get any locally.

I love reloading and it's killing me that I've been using manufactured rounds lately.... but it is what it is I guess.

I hit the local LGS and reman ammo manufacture shop here last week and picked up 50 rounds of 9mm .,. and i don't even have a 9mm ..

but my friends wife does ..

and we have the stuff our selves to reload 9mm and 10mm and 38/357 and dies for the rifles we have .. if it comes down to it ..

I stopped by Sportsmen's Warehouse in Henerietta the other day and saw some deals Blazer 9mm Brass for $19. a box of 50, still a bit high for me even considering that's Biden dollars. They had USA .223 a box of 125 for $99.99! WHOE that's way outa line.

Targetsports had blazer 9mm for 33¢ a rnd. Buy a case get free ship. Their 223 keeps going up. Was 50¢ last week and now up to 60¢ a rnd

Do both. No such thing as too much ammo. Also as stock market crashes and the dollar loses value, ammo always goes up in value.

The whole idea behind preparation is to do it way in advance so if one waited this long then it might be too late.
folks should be all set right now or deal with the consequences of this crazy world.

There are many ways to do this:
over the years buy double and shoot half and properly store the reserve.
Also do like competition shooters whether you are doing skeet, trap, idpa, rifle, or simply planning...
look where the bulk deals are and "invest" in components and be ready to reload any time / all the time.
The calculator is your friend so consider everything, transportation vs. driving to a warehouse, etc..
Recycle brass/hulls, take care of components, buy bulk at best possible deals.
cartridge consolidation by parent/donor case, bore is also a good tactic (cross compatible components)

That is the way.
